Pattern Study Four, acrylic, charcoal, ink on wood block, 6" x 8"

O’Donnell’s Pattern pieces consist of botanical patterning and impulsive mark making. For O’Donnell, the pattern acts as a ground from which to work − an invitation for exploration. Both additive and reductive trials are incorporated during these investigations. There is a significant physical, tactile approach to the development of his work. He is fascinated by the incised line − both process and resolution. There is a balance between serendipitous moments and times of control. He “lives” with a piece for awhile, eventually approaching it again with a clear − or sometimes newly informed − psyche.
