Artist Profile
David Derr's paintings, mixed media
and digital works are all explorations into various forms of creativity.
He states: "Visual arts, music, dance, literature, myths,
mysticism, spirituality and the sciences as well as everyday life
all contribute in the creation of these images. Good art, whether
visual, theatrical, musical or literary, presents subjects that
engage the heart and soul on levels we can't always explain. This
is what visual artists do best, we create unique visual languages,
languages that can convey layers of emotion and meaning at a glance
through color, shape, form and line."
The layering of imagery in Derr's
paintings reveal multiple meanings---often through the union of
opposites---with a rich sense of humanity and a healthy dose of
irony. Because of this layering the images in his paintings have
depth and multiple meanings which bring the viewer back again
and again, each time to find and explore unexpected paths.
Derr has exhibited his work internationally and has been featured
in print in Photoshop User, Digital Fine Arts, Gallery & Studio
& The New York Times. His work is included in the book, "Beatles
Art" by Boxigami Press, in Branches Quarterly and Moondance
magazines, and his artwork has illustrated internal news sources
for the Australian Senate.
The artist is represented online
at D2Studios.com, DiscoverJerseyArts.com, Museum of Computer Art
and DigitalArt.org. He has received numerous awards from The International
Digital Mural Competition, the NYC Art Directors Club, and Adobe's
Digital Imaging Competition. He is also the Creative Director
for the Diverse City Theater Company, Inc. in New York City as
well as president of D2 Studios Inc.
The Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation Artist Initiative Exhibition Space
and Gallery at Fairleigh Dickinson University's, in Madison NJ presented an exhibition of 20 works by David Derr in 2007.
Praise for David Derr
"With works that could be
described as a cross between surrealism and fantasy, spiced with
a hefty does of allegory thrown in "for good measure,"
David Derr's art stands out as truly unique. One is tempted to
see influences of Dadaism or the Blaue Reiter school of Expressionism
in Derr's free use of color and form, but his oils, mixed media,
and digital works are distinctive and highly original. Intriguing
and challenging viewers through an astonishingly rich vocabulary
of symbols and allusions, they bear carefully crafted, often humorous
titles which tantalize the mind and evoke connections to music,
philosophy, literature/poetry, theater and, of course, to visual
arts."
