Artist Profile

Harry C. Doolittle was born September 17, 1923. He grew up Winnetka, a Chicago suburb, and graduated from Northwestern University. Previous to becoming a full-time artist, Harry C. Doolittle was a copywriter/creative director at some of America's leading ad agencies, a managing editor of two magazines pertaining to radio and television ratings and a partner with his wife, designer of the Exclusively Misook line of women's clothes.

He began painting in the sixties and had his first show in 1978 in Evansville, IN, where he was an ad agency's creative director. The exhibit, featuring 20 of his works completely sold out. Similar successes followed in two shows in 1980, in Harare, Zimbabwe and Johannesburg, South Africa where he was creative director for an American based ad agency. In the mid 80's, he and wife Misook moved to New York City. Throughout the years his paintings have been purchased by numerous collectors in Seoul, South Korea, and the U.S. primarily in Chicago, Detroit and Westchester County, NY.

The artist applies acrylic colors beneath and on glass. The painted glass is then cemented to canvas boards. Next, gold brass leaf and silver aluminum leaf are applied at different places throughout the canvas, which interact with the multiple colors. The work is highly reflective and dimensional, only truly appreciated when viewed in person.

Doolittle's other career highlights include working in a factory making tractors, a stage member on the TV show, "Kukla, Fran & Ollie," and an assistant to the writer on the Howdy Doody children's show.

He and Misook have been married twenty-seven years, and reside in Scarsdale, NY.

Praise for Harry C. Doolittle

"Nothing in Harry C. Doolittle's paintings can be said to be extraneous; every element has its place in the formal scheme, which would collapse were it to be eliminated. In this way, each of his paintings is like a finely wrought visual poem."
Byron Coleman, Gallery & Studio Magazine

"Many of his ideas come from his dreams. He sees paintings in his sleep and then recreates what his subconscious mind conjures in the studio. Doolittle has been creating from his dreams and daydreams since the 1960's."
Debra Banerjee, Art Editor Scarsdale Inquirer

"In subtle, reflective hues, sharp lines and symmetrical geometries, Harry C. Doolittle's abstract compositions evince a 'nonobjective' emotional spontaneity rooted in specific and considered gestures which fosters a subconcious and fluid relationship with the viewer."
Agora Gallery Exhibition, June 2006

"Doolittle's work can be seen to share similiarities with Kasmir-Malevich, who founded Suprematism. He achieves nonobjective representation — the supremacy of pure feeling... His work is a kinetic optical journey into color, whimsy, geometry, healing, drama, and architecture... "
