Grief, oil and acrylic on canvas, 40" x 30"
"This was painted during the most painful time of my life.
I had lost my best friend, my mentor, my "third parent".
I don't remember why, but I chose the pose of Botticelli's Venus, perhaps
because
that painting is about birth and this one was about death.
The face was a self-portrait, the missing parts represent what I felt --
that pieces were missing, that I had been crippled, that I couldn't speak.
The fire represents the fire that consumed my friend. I added some details later,
from another experience, and it has become a source of ongoing healing."
