Profile
“The sustaining relationship we share with nature is expressed in each breath and embedded within the fabric of our bodily systems. In my work I seek to reveal this, and its divine essence, with the intention of mending perceived separation between nature and self.”
The ecocentric focus of Ms. Dunphy’s art stems from her rural midwest upbringing. After high school she moved to the city to attend the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. The contrast of the urban environment spurred a shift in consciousness moving her to make work centered around the natural world.
After graduating with a B.F.A. in Printmaking, Jody continued exploring the human/nature connection in her art. In 2004 she was awarded an artist residency at the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology. There, she created large collagraph prints about symbiosis in the coastal rainforest ecosystem where the Sitka Center is located.
In the recent years, her work has become intertwined with her yoga practice, leading her to explore our connection to nature from within the body.
Using a matrix of arch-shaped plates, she develops her prints through a process of accretion, layering collagraph, monotype and relief. Each unique print is finished with gold leaf to imbue the image with a sense of spirit/divine. The arch, referencing sacred architecture, is the “container” for the imagery, thereby enshrining the subject matter.
Jody currently resides in Oregon and shows her work regionally and nationally. Her work is represented in the permanent collections of Pacific University, Carroll College, and the Oregon State University College of Agricultural Sciences Art About Agriculture collection.
