Profile
Having exhibited in over 100 group and solo shows in the last 10 years, she has won dozens of awards and ribbons for her work. Recently she won Best in Show at The CT Academy of Fine Arts Annual Juried Show; her work was shown in a juried exhibition at Lyme Art Association, CT; she was awarded the Valentine and Albert Camurati Memorial Award; and she was selected to be one of the 75 finalists chosen in The Richeson 75 Figure/Portrait Competition, Kimberly, WI and in their online gallery. Mary also won the 2006 Board of Directors Award from the Hudson Valley Art Association's recent anniversary show at the National Arts Club in New York City, and the Yarmouth Art Guild Award at the 2006 New England Juried Show at the Cape Cod Art Association, another national show. In recent months she has also exhibited at the Salmagundi Club in Manhattan, the International Museum of the Horse in Lexington, Kentucky, the Krause Gallery in Providence, Rhode Island as well as having recent solo shows in Boston and New York City. Mrs. Felton's subjects are varied, and though she has a great affinity for horses, her favorite has always been the human figure. It is here that her background in illustration comes through. She doesn't favor traditional, formal poses, but instead likes her portraits to say something about who the person is, not just what they look like. This is why she loves to draw athletes. Not only do they tend to have beautiful bodies, but they represent passion, hard work, discipline and inspiration. As an artist celebrating realism, these are the very elements that bring success to her own work. She also received two awards in The Duxbury Art Association's Midsummer Art Show in Duxbury, MA. Her charcoal "The Soloist" was awarded Second Place in the drawing category and "After Hours" won an honorable mention ribbon in the drawing category. Praise for Mary Felton "Mary Felton's charcoal drawings are quite striking and dramatic. Her use of composition and expert rendering masterly sets a mood unique to every piece." Joyce Pommer, Owner/Director, Franklin 54 Gallery, New York City "I have been an admirer of
Mary's work for a number of years. The beautiful use of light
the
incredible detail
the texture of different objects using
only the black of the charcoal and the white of the paper
amazing!" "What I truly love about
Mary Felton's work is the lost and found spaces of her dense magical
shadows
simply wonderful. You know what's there and you can
almost see, but better still, you can feel the story in her shadows.
Lovely!"
