Artist Profile

When asked to describe the style of his artwork, Pennsylvania artist, Scott A. Munroe likens his collection to surrealism with a touch of abstract expressionism, "Nature provides the inspiration and colors; I provide the metamorphosis in the execution of the images." After developing a fascination with all of nature's creatures in his youth, Munroe uses his careful observation and memories to recreate their likeness on Bristol. His creatures however, are the conscious desire of the artist to imbue in them the human persona. His work is the perfect combination of the extraordinary and the organic and as such portrays an alternate view of the universe that is truly unique to the artist.

Munroe specifically works with colored pencils and uses a "burnishing" technique to blend the pigments as well as the use of petroleum jelly to blend the colors, creating a "wash" similar to watercolors. His work begins with an inspiration found in nature; from there the direction grows and shifts according to his ingenious inspiration. The spontaneity that results adds to the abstract quality of the work.

Scott A. Munroe is a primarily self-taught artist working in Reading, Pennsylvania. In addition to holding a membership at the Ward-Nasse Gallery NYC, he also volunteers his time to teach arts to youth as a part of the Mentoring and the Arts Program at the Police Athletic League of Greater Reading. He has exhibited in galleries throughout the northeastern U.S. and has work displayed in private collections.

His piece "Puzzled?" was recently accepted into the Monkdogz Urban Art Inc. juried show, "The Day After Tomorrow - The Next Tortured Genius" in New York, NY.
