Artist Profile

It was during Tom Schneider’s early life experience growing up in the Midwest that two things became apparent. First, education was important to growth and second, to question “the norm and push beyond it.” Art became one of the vehicles where he could learn and develop while at the same time question the norm and push the boundaries.

While visiting the East coast he became fascinated with NYC and decided to make it his “home.” Soon his curiosity and need for further understanding led to Pratt and an MFA degree in painting and Pace University and an MBA degree in marketing.

Traditional subjects such as still life, landscape and figurative painting have been the artist's primary focus but always with the notion of pushing beyond traditional limits. His paintings have taken on a 3D format where he incorporates the floor and wall space with the intention of drawing the viewer into the picture space. This interest in 3D construction and art also led to starting his own business in Theater Crafts where he was selected by The Smithsonian Institute to represent NYC’s Theater Craft Industry in their “Folk Life and Cultural Heritage” exhibition in Washington DC in 2000.

Tom has exhibited extensively in the U.S. and Japan as well as being involved locally with Brooklyn’s art scene. In 2001 he was selected and recognized for his contribution to Brooklyn arts by a group of Brooklyn curators including Yuko Nii and Terry Lindall of Williamsburg Art & Historical Center and independent curator James Pinney.
