A few quotes from "Golden Keys"
by Renée Phillips ...
"Success should not be measured by external events - when you sell your first work, or have your first one-person show, or get a positive review by a critic, or when your work is collected by a museum. It should be a constant flame that glows steadily and triumphantly within you - originating from the knowledge that you create your destiny. You don't need anyone - a dealer, an agent, an art critic or patron - to give you validation or approval. Success - is yours - Now! "
~
Renee Phillips
"Your art is a reflection of how you respond to life - your emotions, your experiences, your values, beliefs and choices - the sum of what makes you unique. Let it shine. Let it rejoice. Let it reverberate throughout the world. Let it shock. Let it rock. Let it console. Let it cajole. Let it break all the rules. Let it claim new frontiers. Let it flood the universe. Let it make a ruckus. Let it fill the air with song. Let it be."
~ Renee Phillips
FROM THE CHAPTER ABOUT GALLERIES
Learn from rejection. If the gallery doesn't accept your work on your first attempt, use the experience to gain some information. Ask why, and for any ideas they may have about which galleries might be interested. The prominent artist Jennifer Bartlett said about her first appointment with Paula Cooper: "I was disappointed that Paula Cooper didn't instantly offer me a one-woman show. But she gave three or four numbers to call."

When approaching galleries, don't think of it as a "pass" or "fail" situation. If the gallery doesn't accept your work on your first attempt, use the experience to gain some information.
They may also want you to submit your materials again at a later date - to see how your work develops, so remember never to burn your bridges."
