The Waxing Moon: An Advantage for Artists
By Victoria Martin, Artist and Astrologer

Victoria Martin, Creation: The Seventh Heavens, oil on canvas. Victoria's works invite you to gaze into the ancient world as mysterious, forgotten languages describe the beauty and wonder of the first human cultures. She explores the primal power symbols of wings, serpents and stars through long-lost magical spells, healing incantations and astronomical festivals. See more of her work.

New Moon = like springtime… Plowing / Planting
First Quarter = like summer… Growth / Fertilization / Irrigation
Full Moon = like autumn…Harvest / Inspiration
Last Quarter = like winter...Inventory / Product Presentation

If you agree that creativity is like organic growth process, then perhaps you'll consider abiding by the Old Farmers Almanac advice; plant on the New Moon!

Astrology is about the stars but even more about the dance between the Earth, Moon, and Sun. The dark of the moon, like dawn, is a time when people are just waking up. The Almanac says, plant your seeds on the New Moon, and they will grow as the Moon waxes. Astrologers would say: get started despite inertia!

The First Quarter is one week after the New Moon -- the moon looks like it is cut in half -- this is the time to check up on your foundation work so that you reach fulfillment on the Full Moon.

Creative people need to be inspired. And the Full Moon is famous for that, so plan to be in the studio as much as possible! It's a five-day time window; two days either side of the peak date.

During the Last Quarter -- now the Moon is cut in half the other way -- chapters are finalized and presentations are appropriate. Some projects last longer that a month, so another cycle of development occurs when the next New Moon rolls around!

Sometimes Holidays elongate the phase: for example the New Moon effect in February might encompass Valentines day and the Full Moon could extend past July 2 to effect Independence day.
