Artists Share
You don't have a garden just for yourself. You have it to share. -- Augusta Carter
To have joy one must share it. Happiness was born a twin. -- Lord Byron
Light is the task where many share the toil. -- Homer
People enjoy helping other people, and when it comes to artists they are no exception. In fact, one might argue artists are more generous with their discoveries. It is quite common to see a group of artists gathered together at a social event trading news, creative processes, discount sources and even helpful gossip. Yes, that's true, don't deny it.
Recently Elinore Bucholtz sent me the kind of information of a helpful nature, not gossip, that gave me an idea. How about starting a section on the Manhattan Arts website titled "Artists Share" in which we will add artists' helpful info.
So, here's your opportunity to share and learn. Send your brief tip or discovery to renee@manhattanarts.com and type Artists Share in the subject heading.
Lisa Bartell wrote: "I would like to share with other artists, who like myself, are learning to be more savvy in the art world. I recently visited an out of town gallery that was interested in seeing my work. Thanks to Renee's book Presentation Power Tools, I felt very aware of all questions needing answers from the dealer. My mistake was not asking these questions via phone or email prior to leaving home. It turned out that the artist was expected to pay numerous expenses, including marketing, framing shipping and exhibiting. This was an excellent learning experience, but very costly, time consuming and emotionally draining. All artists! Please make sure you ask all necessary questions and receive complete answers prior to an out of town gallery visit."

Patti Brown has made a few money saving suggestions worth looking into: She buys art supplies from Daniel Smith because they offer their own line of watercolors and oils that are less expensive and equally as good in quality as name brands. She also shops at Cheap Joes for their American Journey watercolors. And she likes Jerry's Artorama for the big selection of all supplies.

Benny Andersson's painting is featured on the cover of the March 2007 issue of the magazine Sedona Journal of Emergence! It looks fantastic. He wanted me to let other artists know that you can submit your work for their cover. Go to www.sedonajournal.com for more info.
