If we choose to be driven by these emotional forces we sadly waste so much time and energy living unfullfilled lives. The true nature of our existence is hidden from our view. Far too many people live their lives floating, following, or in a state of inertia or blame if their lives are being lived without Purpose. They fail to connect their star brilliance with what they truly want for themselves, their family and for humanity. The great philosopher Socrates expressed it so very succinctly, “Know thyself.” Our mission is profoundly more than our role as bread earner, artist, parent, spouse, teacher or writer. We often make the mistake of defining ourselves by our role, which limits our potential. We often fail to see the larger picture. We fail to have an Abundance of Purpose. People with An Abundance of Purpose have a mission, a dream and passion with which they profoundly affect the people around them, add significant quality to their own experiences, and make a difference by making the planet a better place. The great Indian mystic and physician Patanjali, who lived somewhere between 200 B.C. and 200 A.D., and who first recognized the power in the practice of meditation, said, "When you are inspired by some great purpose, some extraordinary project, all your thoughts break their bonds; your mind transcends limitations, your consciousness expands in every direction, and you find yourself in a new, great and wonderful world. Dormant forces, faculties and talents become alive, and you discover yourself to be a greater person by far than you ever dreamed yourself to be." Behind every Purpose is a mission. We all have a mission in life – one that gives our life meaning. It is a total manifestation of our unique capabilities and heartfelt desires. Your choice to be an artist is part of your mission, but what kind of artist do you want to be? What do you want to do with your art? What kind of impact do you want your art to make? If you were to write your eulogy, what would it say? How are you going to be remembered? What values did you express? How did you change the lives of others? How were you unique? Mandela’s mission was to end apartheid; Mother Teresa’s mission was to offer solace to the sick and end human suffering. Few of us will ever accomplish what they did but you can still achieve remarkable things. Your art can serve as a catalyst if your mission is to participate in social change. It can provide solace for broken hearts if your mission is to heal. It can be the stimulus for tolerance among different cultures if your mission is to unite. Embrace those big dreams that seem elusive and integrate them into your daily habits to make them tangible. What action could you take right Now that would set your dream in motion? All great journeys begin with a desired destination. As a career consultant when a client comes to me for guidance my desire is to help them attain focus, self-sufficiency and empowerment. Before the consultation begins, I ask them to provide, along with their presentation materials, a list of their objectives. I usually ask, “Where do you want to be one or two years from now?” It is important to ask yourself periodically: “Am I pursuing my goals Now? Do I feel passionate about the kind of art I am producing Now? These questions will either comfort you or provoke you to make profound changes. An Exercise In addition to answering the questions above, if you were to appear on the cover of a major magazine what would you want the headline to say? Quotes for Inspiration "You are much deeper, much broader, much brighter than any idea you could have of yourself." ~ Harry Palmer "You want to set a goal that is big enough that in the process of achieving it you become someone worth becoming." ~ Jim Rohn "We act as though comfort and luxury were the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about." ~ Charles Kingsley “If you are on the right path you will find that invisible hands are helping.” ~ Joseph Campbell "Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss it you will land among the stars." ~Les Brown "All that we are is the result of what we have thought. The mind is everything. What we think, we become." ~ Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Today’s Affirmation I see myself as a unique individual with unlimited talents and skills which I express with full confidence and creative freedom. I am on a perfect journey as the creator of my own destiny. My path is always lit by an illuminating glow which imbues me with passion and persistence. All people and conditions appear in my life as helping hands to guide me on my life with purpose. My life is an opportunity which I create for personal and spiritual growth. All challenges are there to serve my greater good. I am grateful for where I have been and filled with excitement as I enjoy the present in its fullness of potentiality.
