Take Your Fear With You and Do it Anyway!
I recently overhead someone say: “Take your fear with you and do it anyway.” I thought, what a wonderful way to express ourselves instead of saying, “don’t be afraid”, as if we can command this at will. Such words can only lead to a feeling of failure. We are human and like all members of the animal kingdom we experience fear. When we can admit it and dive into the waves we are the commanders of action rather than victims of paralysis.
So, when we are afraid of bringing our creative products or ideas to the public and exposing ourselves, take our fear with us and do it anyway. Isn’t that what deodorant was invented for?
When we are afraid to submit our work to a gallery or other venue let’s take our fear with us and do it anyway. What’s the worst that could happen? If they reject us, we can take our fear and our presentation materials to someone else, and keep walking. Isn’t that what shoes were made for?
Trying to shake off fear may be time consuming and frustrating. So, don’t wait until the fear goes away. The only way to get over fear is to get through the task. When we get to the other side we may realize F.D.R.’s famous words in his first inaugural address, which took place during the depression: “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” By the way, in the same speech, he also said, “Happiness lies not in the mere possession of money; it lies in the joy of achievement, in the thrill of creative effort.”
I was recently visited by an art dealer who wanted to look at my wearable art. He was visiting from out of town and was recommended to me through a mutual friend. He was told, “You must see Renée. She is well known and has influence.” So, I could tell he was eager to establish a business relationship. When he arrived at my showroom and I opened the door, I was no longer Renée Phillips, Director of Manhattan Arts International, author, noted keynote speaker with 27 years of career credentials… I immediately transformed into Renée the artist, disrobed and vulnerable. I stood before this person ready to be judged, and I admit, the fear of rejection attacked my confidence. But, as soon as the dealer shook my hand, I looked him straight in the eyes, smiled warmly and reminded myself , “no matter what he thinks he cannot take my passion away from me.” I relaxed, and could thoroughly enjoy the meeting.
So, when we examine the cause of our fear, it might be we are afraid that someone will take something away from us. But, isn’t it true, we must give that person permission to rob us? No matter how a person judges us, we still own our creative passion, self-esteem, confidence and talent, unless we give it away or don’t own it in the first place.
